Elvis Presley

8th January 1935 - 16th August 1977

Elvis Presley became a megastar in the 1950s, beginning his conquest in Memphis, Tennessee but eventually becoming popular the world over. He became known as "The King of Rock n' Roll" and was famed for his movements and attire onstage as much as for his singing voice and musical talent. Girls became obsessed with the young Elvis' good looks, whilst young men wanted to look like him. Elvis' career path was in large part under the control of his manager Colonel Tom Parker, also known as "The Colonel", a man who knew what strings to pull to help Elvis get to the top.

During the height of his career, Elvis was drafted into the US army. To the admiration of many, Elvis did not seek to escape his military duty and spent a couple of years in Germany. The stint also helped to reinforce his image as a good American amid criticism that he played "Devil music" and was a bad influence on America's youth.

Elvis struggled to regain his previous level of success after returning from his time in the military, competing now against the likes of The Beatles, though he did eventually make a come-back. As time progressed he became increasingly addicted to prescription drugs. He died at the age of 42 in his Memphis mansion, Graceland, in 1977, officially of a heart attack. There is a widespread theory, however, that Elvis never died and in fact staged his death to be able to lead a more peaceful life.
